Welcome to kindergarten!
Week of August 30- September 3
Kid's quote: "Always try your best. And if that doesn't do it for you, I know just how you feel." We had a great first week of school. I know this will be a wonderful year in kindergarten. Here is what we'll be studying this week.
Language Arts: This week we'll be doing baseline assessments. Each student will be evaluated for listening comprehension, letter and sound recognition and print awareness. We're learning our short vowel sounds by saying the letter, tapping it with our first two fingers and saying a word that uses the letter. The children enjoy a song that asks them to "phonercize." We say the letter with our hands in the air, touch our shoulders while we say the sound and make a motion as we say the word.
Bible: Our memory verse this week is Hebrews 11:3, "The universe was formed at God's command." We'll begin our unit on creation, following the Biblical account of days one and two. It will be exciting to see a cloud in kindergarten!
Math: We'll explore teddy bear counters and pattern blocks and make a pictograph. We'll also take a walk around the facility, noting the shapes and numbers we see. The children will enjoy eating to zero and blastoff counting.
Handwriting: The children will listen to some songs that will help them remember the rules for correct handwriting. They'll have a chance to use manipulatives that explain the use of big and little lines and curves. Proper pencil grip will be demonstrated and practiced. Pencil pick up activities will be started in our workbooks.
We'll also be discussing various jobs and community helpers as we get ready for Labor Day. Remember, there is no school on Labor Day, September 6.
Praying for God's best for our families,
Miss Mary
