Math: This week we will be working on addition of doubles, e.i. 1 + 1, 2 + 2, 3 + 3, adding o and adding 1, the commutative property of addition, identifying addends and sums, graphing, telling time to the hour, using logical reasoning to solve a problem, and solving a problem by acting it out. Students will have homework in math each Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Please be certain your child completes this homework and returns it in their math folder the following morning. Reading: This week we are reading Iris and Walter, which is a Realistic Fiction story. Please remind your child that realistic fiction means that the actions in the story could really happen, but it is not actually a true story. In this story, Iris is a child who moved to the country with her parents. She did not like the country because she was lonely and thought there were no children there, until. . . her grandpa took her on an adventure and they found Walter. Iris and Walter became fast friends, showing Iris that the country is a nice, friendly place to live also. God created us all in need of companionship and friendship, and He always places the right friends in our lives at exactly the right time.
Language/Grammar: What makes a complete sentence? As we study this week, the children are learning that a sentence must make sense, be in the correct order, have a capital letter for the beginning and punctuation at the end.
Writing: Normally, we think of a voice as what we literally "hear". However, in writing voice is the word choice showing how the writer feels. Since we do not literally speak during writing, we must be certain we choose our words carefully in order for the audience to know how we feel. Bible: Our focus in Bible this week is to understand how terrrible it is to be a slave. The students will participate in several activities giving them a slight idea of how it felt to be a slave under the hand of the Egyptians. In application to our own lives today, we need to understand that sin makes us a slave. We must strive to continually make right choices in order to avoid becoming a slave to sin and unhappiness...I am so thankful God sent his only Son, Jesus, in order to free us from our bondage of sin, just as He sent Moses to free the Israelites from the Egyptians.
Science: Weather! What fun we are having learning about weather. We are learning about cloud types, what the types of clouds mean, and weather terminology. The best part of this learning is our super fun hands-on activities. We will be making several weather "instruments", as well as going outdoors to experience and experiment! IT IS SO MUCH FUN TO BE IN SECOND GRADE! WE ARE LEARNING SO MUCH AND HAVING A GREAT TIME DOING SO!!! Important Events: Monday, September 6, 2010 - No School. Labor Day.
Wednesday, September 22, 2010 - See You at The Pole. 8:45am in the school parking lot.
August 19 - September 9, 2010 - Attraction and Dining Coupon Books. These books are a great fund raiser for our school, as the proceeds are generous and the books are something of value to the owner. I love my Attraction and Dining Coupon Book. This book will pay for itself many times over as you use the coupons in them. I am thankful for the money I have saved with my coupon books. I bought one as a gift and it is still being used. Don't forget to save Box Tops! The competition will begin September 1, 2010! |
