Webdesk Updates~ Week of Aug. 30, 2010 Teacher: Mrs. Gwen Rhodes Assistant Teacher: Ms. Pam Lewis
We had an awesome 1st week! Thank you for sharing your children with us.
Announcements: Please remind your child to: *Put his/her name and date in the top, right-hand side of each paper. *Put his/her name and date on each side of the math sheets. *Take the blue binder to his/her desk each morning. *Read the board for the morning work assignment and to see which homework assignments need to be turned in. THANK YOU!
Curriculum News Here are the topics/skills we will strive to master this week: Bible~The students looked so cute and authenic as Israelites wandering in the desert last week. Everytime we passed a water fountain, they were "dying of thirst." As you can imagine, the children were glad to enter the "Land of Milk and Honey" and enjoy a yummy snack of toasted pita bread & honey, along with milk. Thank you to Liz Brown for preparing the snack, and thank you to Lori O., Camille (Devin's mom), and Devona (Dwayne's sister) for helping make this a special time. Memory verse~ “ Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows." Galatians 6:7 For Friday's memory verse assessment, students will recite the verse. They may begin on Wednesday, if they want. Reading~ We will work on sequencing and summarizing with our new story, "What About Me?" We will also use context clues and word structure to figure out the meaning of our vocabulary words: plenty, straying, carpenter, thread, knowledge, merchant, marketplace, and carpetmaker. Writing~ Students interviewed each other, paying close attention to capitalization and punctuation. Currently, we are focusing on starting each sentence with a capital letter and ending with the correct punctuation. Spelling~ All of the students have 8 words that are plural nouns. We discussed when to add -s, -es, and -ies. Words 9-15 are personal to your child. Those are either words he/she misspelled in an assignment last week, words related to our Bible or history lessons, or they are plural nouns that are harder to spell. Students selected their 9-15 words from a list, and I initialed their paper to show that they are spelled correctly. Students should complete 3 activities from the list in their binder by Friday. Please have your child staple the papers together, if possible. For this week's test, students will trade lists and call out the words to each other. Math~ This week we will focus on: reviewing +0, +1, and double addition facts, making a design "worth" $20 (The pattern blocks all have a different value.), writing the date using digits, dividing a square into 2, 4, and 8 equal parts, reading a thermometer, using logical reasoning to solve problems, and rounding to the nearest 10. We will also do a challenging mixed review of skills. Social Studies~ We have started our unit on ancient Rome. Students have created a folder where they are keeping vocabulary cards, a map they have labeled, as well as a timeline on the history of Rome that they will begin this week. We will learn about the Punic Wars and the Roman Republic.
